Everything You Should Know about Nonprofit Organizations

I stopped by Tevakanui Studios today to drop off a book to one of their workers. They are a bookkeeping and business consulting client of mine that teaches children and adults Polynesian dance, as well as how to make drums, costumes, and many more. When I visited them, they were preparing for the studio’s 20th anniversary.

Seeing as they’re already doing good things to make an impact in the world, we’ve been looking into restructuring them as a nonprofit organization. Many people don’t really know what nonprofit organizations are or how they work, so I thought I would take this opportunity to explain everything you need to know about nonprofit orgnizations.

What Are Nonprofit Organizations?

Nonprofit organizations, also known as not-for-profit organizations or charities, are entities that are established with the purpose of serving a particular social cause or group of individuals rather than for the benefit of private interests. These organizations are typically focused on providing a service or promoting a particular issue, and they are exempt from paying federal and state taxes with their income.

Types of Nonprofit Organizations

There are many different types of not-for-profit organizations, including charities, foundations, religious institutions, and professional associations, among others. To qualify as a nonprofit organization, an entity must meet certain criteria established by federal and state laws.

These criteria typically include having a stated nonprofit purpose, being organized and operated in a way that serves the public good, and not distributing profits or surplus income to owners or shareholders.

Charities. Charities are not-for-profit organizations that are focused on helping those in need, either through direct services or through fundraising for other organizations.

Foundations. Foundations are typically funded by a single source, such as an individual or a corporation, and that provide grants to other organizations or individuals working to address a particular issue.

Religious institutions. Many religious institutions, such as churches, synagogues, and mosques, are organized as nonprofit organizations.

Professional associations. Professional associations are nonprofits that are focused on advancing a particular profession or industry.

Maintaining Nonprofit Status

To maintain their tax-exempt status, nonprofit organizations must adhere to certain rules and regulations, including filing annual tax returns and following specific guidelines for fundraising and lobbying activities. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is responsible for granting and enforcing tax-exempt status for them.

Getting Involved with Nonprofit Organizations

Nonprofit organizations rely on a variety of sources for their funding, including donations from individuals, grants from foundations and government agencies, and revenue from fundraising events and activities. They may also generate income through the sale of goods or services, as long as any profits are used to support the organization’s mission and are not distributed to owners or shareholders.

There are many different ways you can get involved with these groups. If you are interested in supporting a particular cause or making a difference in your community, consider looking into the organizations working in your area and seeing how you can get involved—whether it’s through volunteering your time or making donations. If a nonprofit doesn’t exist for a community or cause you’re passionate about, you may even volunteer to establish your own.
